Frith Chronicles
Shami Stovall
Gravedigger Volke Savan dreams of becoming an arcanist — a mage bonded to a mythical creature to wield elemental magic — like his hero Gregory Ruma. When he bonds a terrifying knightmare made of shadow, Volke discovers his hero is a murderer spreading corrupted magic by slaughtering phoenixes. Across the Frith Chronicles, Volke trains at the Frith arcanist academy, bonds and masters eldritch creatures (pegasus, griffin, hydra, leviathan, knightmare, manticore, phoenix), sails as a dread pirate, fights in the coliseum, survives plague necromancy, and hunts the world serpent, climbing Initiate to Master and Grandmaster arcanist tiers to confront Ruma and save the island nation. Perfect for fans of Cradle and Codex Alera, this is a creature-bond progression fantasy with explicit academy ranks and tiered magical advancement.
Progression: Arcanist Bonding Progression: Humans bond with a single mythical creature (pegasus, griffin, hydra, leviathan, knightmare, manticore, phoenix, etc.) to become an arcanist and wield creature-tied elemental magic (shadow, storm, fire). Academy ranks: Initiate → Arcanist → Adept → Master Arcanist → Grandmaster Arcanist, with classroom exams, field trials and creature-mastery milestones. Creature-evolution tiers: each bond deepens, unlocking stronger spells, physical augmentation, and hybrid transformations. Threat escalation: each volume introduces a new regional trial (piracy, coliseum, plague cult, world-serpent leviathan) requiring Volke to master a new creature and spell tier. Explicitly progression-focused per Goodreads ('bonding with a mythical creature' and 'become an arcanist') and praised as Cradle/Codex Alera comparable creature-progression.
