Penitent
C.B. Titus
An action-packed and gritty Progression Fantasy LitRPG from C.B. Titus, bestselling author of Armor and Downtown Druid. War is Hell. Redemption is Divine. Michael didn't want to die. He didn't deserve to die. After a lost battle with cancer that started only a year after he retired, he'd lived what many people would call a full life, but it wasn't enough. He wanted more time. When he found himself drawn toward the light, he fought his way away from it. Unfortunately, that didn't take him back to the life he wanted to live. Reincarnated in another world, Michael is forced to be a Penitent, a soldier in the country he was reborn into in order to pay a debt to society he owes for taking the life of the child whose body he inhabits. It's not the life he wants, but it's the only one he has. Because titles are earned. Deeds are written. And power is forged in the blood of battle. Experience the start of a gritty Progression Fantasy LitRPG series where every scar earned is a power granted and every deed written on the soul can change the fate of kingdoms. Perfect for fans of The Iron Prince, Bastion, Iron Blooded, and A Soldier's Life!
Progression: Titles & Blessings LitRPG Progression. Central advancement is the Penitent system: reincarnated 'Takers' who inadvertently possess newborn bodies are detected at birth, forcibly aged via potions, and conscripted as Penitents to repay a societal debt. Power is granted through Titles earned by deeds, Blessings from gods, and a System that writes deeds onto the soul. Every scar earned is a power granted; protagonist acquires a rare healing skill plus combat proficiency, training at a military academy where Takers are forged. Progression is measured by title acquisition, blessing tiers, and skill mastery, with later volumes showing the protagonist maxing out. Verified via Goodreads book description ('titles are earned.
