Skadi's Saga
Phil Tucker
Death was only the beginning. Skadi's world is shattered when an empire razes her home. Fleeing to her uncle's remote stronghold on the dreaded Draugr Coast, she vows to become a shieldmaiden and avenge her kin. But she hides a truth: she has already died once, resurrected by the cruel goddess Freyja and gifted with the power to weave fate itself. Amidst carnivorous mermaids, undead-haunted mountains, giants and gods walking among mortals, Skadi's quest for vengeance unfolds as a fierce saga of revenge, rebirth, and the brutal beauty of Norse myth. Now her name is legend — giantslayer, wyrd weaver, jarl's daughter — and her vengeance leads to an ancient evil buried deep within the Coast that even mighty warriors fear.
Progression: Norse-inspired Wyrd/threads progression is central and explicit, verified via Goodreads series 415795, book descriptions, and reader reviews. Mechanics: (1) Wyrd threads — every mortal has a golden thread of fate woven by the Norns; length represents destiny/survivability. (2) Divine bestowal — heroes who please the gods with brave, daring actions are bestowed additional golden threads, expanding their fate-buffer; threads can be gambled to escape impossible situations or guarantee impossible hits. (3) Wyrd Weaver distinction — ordinary heroes cannot see how many threads they have; once all are expended they die even if heroic, while Wyrd Weavers (like Skadi, blessed by Freyja) can see and deliberately weave/burn threads, making fate manipulation a quantifiable resource. (4) Martial ranks — shieldmaiden training, jarl's daughter status, giantslayer renown, and Draugr Coast trials provide external rank ladders; Book 1 (Hall of the Jotunn Queen) is origin and first thread awakening, Book 2 escalates to legendary wyrd mastery against ancient darkness. Every volume tracks thread count risk/reward and martial ascension, never peripheral; reviews explicitly call it 'originally beautiful magic system' and 'novel progression/magic system'.
