That Which Devours
Jer Patch
After a colony ship crashes onto a dinosaur-infested alien jungle, Alex is the only survivor denied a Class from the mysterious System that governs this brutal universe. When her Class Selection finally arrives — Legendary Devourer — she discovers a ravenous power that consumes the strength of slain beasts, evolves with every kill, and increasingly blurs the line between guardian and predator. Joined by her brother, a fledgling mech pilot, a raptor-riding ranger and other untested allies, Alex must master a System that rewards monstrous progress, conquer escalating dungeon trials, and unravel her father's dangerous secrets involving the Forgers, cloning vats and mind-controlling collars. Each volume escalates from survival to mastery: surviving the crash and first devouring evolution, dungeon trials and faction politics, hostile new worlds and Forger conspiracies, and finally Labyrinth academies where floors, bosses and rune-craft fusion determine who evolves and who is consumed.
Progression: Explicit LitRPG System central to every volume: (1) Class Selection & Rarity — all inhabitants receive System classes at a threshold; Alex's Legendary Devourer is top-tier rarity with unique hunger/evolution mechanics, gating power and narrative stakes; (2) Levels & Consumption — killing beasts grants XP and direct stat/ability devouring; eating strength literally translates to levels, stat points and skill upgrades, with rapid leveling beyond expectations; (3) Evolution & Forms — Devourer evolves through stages (human → part-monstrous → shadowstalker) with new abilities, senses and costs to humanity; each book title marks an evolutionary phase: Survive → Grow → Adapt → Evolve; (4) Dungeons & Trials — four escalating trial dungeons with collective victory conditions, floors, mini-bosses and loot that force ranked progression and party coordination; (5) Rune-craft & Crystal Song Fusion — later volumes fuse crystal song with rune craft to form new hybrid magic, representing system mastery; (6) System Metrics & Rankings — System tracks levels, rank-ups, build optimization and rewards monstrous progress, with dungeons as gates and alien politics as external pressure to rank up before war consumes them. Weak-to-strong, measured in both upgrades and fragments of humanity left behind.
