The Combat Codes Saga
Alexander Darwin
The Combat Codes Saga is a science-fantasy progression fantasy by Alexander Darwin set in a world where nations have banned weapons of mass destruction and instead resolve conflicts through single combat. Highly skilled warriors known as Grievar Knights represent their nations in brutal hand-to-hand battles inside the Circles. Murray Pearson, a once-famed Knight who suffered a crippling loss for his homeland, scours the underground combat rings for the next champion and finds Cego, an orphaned boy making a name for himself in vicious arenas. Recruited to the Lyceum — the world's most prestigious combat academy — Cego must survive its ruthless ranking system, master Grievar combat, and uncover his mysterious past and missing brothers, while Daimyo manipulate from the shadows and enhance their Knights unnaturally. The sequel follows year two at the Lyceum and Solara Halberd's parallel quest into unknown lands.
Progression: Explicit martial progression central to the series: Grievar Knight hierarchy and nation-representative Circles where single combat decides geopolitical outcomes; underground combat rings as early ranking ladder; Lyceum combat academy with year-based advancement (year one initiation, year two advanced martial studies) and internal team/squad rankings; Daimyo-driven unnatural enhancement as antagonistic power escalation; and personal power growth via brutal hand-to-hand mastery, survival in vicious arenas, and uncovering bloodline/mysterious past that unlocks potential. Each volume marks quantified advancement: Book 1 Cego's rise from underworld arenas to Lyceum admission and proving grounds; Book 2 year-two Lyceum studies, facing enhanced Grievar Knights and expanding into unknown lands with Solara Halberd. Combat mastery, academy year progression, and Circle representation are explicit, measurable levels.
