The Zombie Knight Saga
George M. Frost
After a successful suicide attempt, young Hector Goffe is given a second chance by the grim reaper Garovel - revived as an undead errant bound to save other people's lives and fight unspeakable horrors in the modern fantasy world of Eleg. Cripplingly shy and barely able to speak to people in life, Hector must learn to become a knight who cheats death, serving Garovel while protecting his home country of Atreya and beyond. Across twelve story arcs collected into four volumes, he and his reaper grow from local saviors to players in foreign conflicts and confrontations with supreme powers, with every death, battle, and bond pushing his abilities and humanity further.
Progression: Undead errant progression central and explicit. Hector is revived by Garovel as a lesser undead with supernatural contract - gaining enhanced senses for imminent death, rapid healing, and combat abilities tied to his reaper bond. Progression is structured through story-arc power growth: each volume collects three arcs where Hector's life-saving tally, combat mastery, and understanding of Eleg's supernatural hierarchy advance measuredly. Early arcs focus on controlling his death-sense and basic horror-fighting; later volumes expand to national-scale protection of Atreya, foreign conflicts, and Sairian adventures against supreme-tier entities. Growth is earned through service, survival, and Garovel's mentorship, with measurable steps in durability, reaper-granted powers, and social standing as the saga's power system scales from street-level horror to continent-spanning threats.
