Aether's Revival
Daniel Schinhofen
Aether's Revival follows Gregory Pettit, a farm boy from a small village who dreams of becoming a magi. Each year the Velian Empire administers the Age Day rite of passage that identifies those blessed by Aether. When Gregory's Aether sparks, he is taken to the Magi Academy— a dangerous academy where twice-yearly tournaments can cripple or kill, and empire clans aggressively recruit. Across ten volumes, Gregory progresses from novice to apprentice to adept and beyond, mastering Aether channeling, spellcraft, and clan leadership alongside his wives Yukiko and Jenn and their sworn guard. The series is explicitly structured around academy years, tournament ranks, and Aether cultivation tiers, with each arc centered on breakthroughs, clan advancement, and empire-scale conflict. Originally self-published by Daniel Schinhofen (first published Feb 2020), the series holds 4.41 stars (6,133 ratings) for volume 1 and continues as an ongoing progression fantasy.
Progression: Aether cultivation is explicit and central every volume. Progression is measured through interlocking ladders: (1) Aether Blessing & Channeling— the rite identifies Aether-blessed; magi learn to draw, store, and channel Aether through meridian-like channels, with capacity and control growing per tier; (2) Academy Ranks— Novice (Year 1), Apprentice (Years 2-3), Adept, and Magus tiers, each gated by tournament performance and examinations; (3) Tournament/Clan Ladder— twice-yearly academy tournaments and inter-clan tournaments (Velian, Buldoun, Krogga) rank individuals and clans; victories grant clan standing, resources, and promotion; (4) Spell & Aether Arts— tiered spell lists, aether constructs, healing, and combat forms that must be learned and mastered per rank; higher Aether reserves unlock higher-circle spells. Political advancement (clan recruitment, Pettit clan founding, border commands, and imperial orders) mirrors cultivation rank. Every book is structured around a rank breakthrough and tournament trial, making advancement both narrative and system-driven.
