Painting the Mists
Patrick G. Laplante
Once, there was nothing, and the Mists were lonely. A simple brush painted all of creation. The Clear Sky Brush vanished for countless ages. Now it's back. Cha Ming, an engineering student from Earth, is thrust into a Xianxia world where might makes right, cultivation realms decide fate, and demons trade souls. Gifted with the five-element affinity and the legendary Clear Sky Brush, he must paint his own Dao from the ground up—surviving sect tests, bandits, demon mountains, and immortal auctions—while his sworn brother Huxian the Godbeast fox grows from cub to mountain lord. Across eighteen volumes, Cha Ming forges pills, talismans, paintings, and friendships into a path of creation that defies heavens.
Progression: Central, explicit Xianxia cultivation progression drives the entire series. Cha Ming advances through orthodox realms—Body Tempering → Qi Condensation → Foundation Establishment → Core Formation → Gold Core → Nascent Soul and beyond—each with early/middle/late/peak sub-realms and heavenly tribulations. Progression is layered: elemental cultivation (five elements via painting), alchemy (pill refinement grades), talisman crafting, and a unique Painting Dao that manifests reality (Sealing, Creation, World Painting). The Clear Sky Brush acts as a compounding cheat that demands comprehension over brute force; every breakthrough requires Dao insight, merit, and tribulation survival. Huxian mirrors growth via Godbeast bloodline awakenings and tail count (one to nine tails). Ranked auctions, sect tournaments, and realm-limited battlefields make tier differences brutally quantifiable—core advancement is the plot.
