The Divine Dungeon
Dakota Krout
Cal is a Dungeon Core — a human soul forced into a magical stone — who must grow his dungeon to survive. With his wisp companion Dani, he builds traps, monsters, and floors that lure adventurers to their deaths so he can harvest essence and evolve. Parallel to Cal's growth, sheep-herder turned noble Dale ascends through cultivation, conquering dungeons to advance his own power. Together their paths intertwine against necromantic invasions and the cosmic threat of Xenocide, delivering a classic dungeon-core progression fantasy where structured advancement drives every arc.
Progression: Explicit dungeon-core progression is central and continuously foregrounded. Core system: Cal as a Dungeon Core gains Essence from slain adventurers to purchase upgrades — expanding floors, spawning tiered monsters (bunnies to lethal predators), crafting traps, and evolving core rank and mana density. Each floor functions as a gated power tier requiring breakthrough essence thresholds to unlock. Parallel cultivator progression: Dale advances through adventurer/cultivation ranks by delving dungeons, absorbing rewards (weapons, armor, gold generated by dungeon cores), and performing physical, mental, and Essence cultivation that mirrors traditional cultivation realms. The series formalizes advancement via Essence tiers, dungeon levels/floors, and adventurer ranks, with political and warfare layers that gate higher progression. Essence harvesting, core evolution, and rank ascendance are the engine of the plot across all 5 volumes.
