The Iron Teeth
Scott Straughan
A new, darker age is dawning. The greed of kings has ignited a seemingly endless war. As men fight, the monsters of the untamed wilds are devouring the frontier and villages are abandoned. None of that matters to a nameless goblin slave who just wants to eat. Whisked away to the far off Iron Teeth Mountains, he must evolve into something more than a simple goblin and carve a bloody path through the forests of the North. First he has to get over his crippling fear of trees and survive where everything considers him a quick snack. The lawless North changes as bandits claim territory and Daggerpoint becomes a hive of villainy; later the war between savage bandit lords escalates as Werrick leads his forces against Herad for the crown of the North, while the hobgoblin Blacknail navigates murder and betrayal. Originally a Royal Road web serial (ClearMadness) with thousands of followers, now a 3-book Kindle series.
Progression: Explicit, central monster-evolution and warband hierarchy progression. The protagonist is a nameless goblin slave who must evolve beyond a simple goblin to survive the Iron Teeth Mountains — progression is literal biological and martial evolution (goblin → hobgoblin/Blacknail) gated by survival, combat, and adaptation to the North's forests where everything preys on him. Progression is quantified via goblin tribal ranks, hobgoblin status, bandit lord territories, and city-scale power (Daggerpoint, Herad vs Werrick). The North's lawless hierarchy — from goblin slave to warband member to king claimant — mirrors cultivation realms: each stage unlocks new physical capabilities, fear thresholds (trees, predators), and political leverage. Evolving requires consuming, fighting, and mastering the wilderness, with crippling fears and predator-prey dynamics as explicit gates. The trilogy tracks Book 1 survival/evolution, Book 2 territory/bandit progression in Daggerpoint, Book 3 kingdom-level war for the North.
