The Will of the Many

James Islington

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world, but they do not know everything. Vis Telimus tells them he is an orphan who earned a place at their most prestigious Academy, and that when he graduates he will allow his Will—his inner strength—to be leeched away to the power of those above him, as everyone must do. In truth he was sent to the Academy to solve a murder, search for an ancient weapon, and uncover secrets that may tear the Republic apart. To survive, he must rise through the Academy's ranks and master the Hierarchy's brutal system, because if he cannot, those who know his real name will have no use for him—and if the Hierarchy learns who he truly is, they will kill him.

Progression: Central, explicit Hierarchy Will-based progression drives every arc. The Catenan Republic is built on systematic Will extraction: every citizen's Will (mental/physical resilience and magical potential) is quantified and leeched upward through the Hierarchy's tiers, with those at the top wielding vastly augmented power. Structured advancement at the Academy is central: cadets advance through explicit academic/martial/Will ranks, competitive placements, and graded trials that determine clearance, augmentations, and future position in the Hierarchy. Vis Telimus must measurably grow Will strength, combat capability, and political rank volume-by-volume—training regimens, Will exercises, duels, and examinations provide numeric/positional thresholds. The sequel series (Hierarchy) continues this tiered path, with Will as a cultivatable resource analogous to cultivation realms. Progression is the plot engine: orphan → Academy initiate → ranked competitor → secret operative, with each rank gatekeeping access to knowledge, power, and survival.
