The Stargazer's War
J.P. Valentine
Infinite power, infinite danger. Growing up mortal, Cal only knew a few things about cultivators: they like hierarchies, they hate disrespect, and if you leave one out in deep space long enough they'll go homicidally insane — away from gravity wells and biospheres that generate natural qi, you notice an infinite ocean of incompatible energy. Cal wasn't a cultivator, wasn't even alive after a station massacre, but he saw it, touched it, and can now cultivate it. Rescued by Lucy, an awakened soulship, Cal is pulled into a sect to learn meridian opening and qi cycling while hiding a void-sourced power that dwarfs conventional sources. The Stargazer's War tracks Cal and his misfit friends through sect training, meridian breakthroughs, and jungle-ruin hunts as galactic-scale cultivation politics close in.
Progression: Explicit cultivation progression is central and verified via Goodreads series 367674 and book blurbs/reviews. (1) Qi cultivation + meridian opening — cultivators generate and cycle qi from planetary biospheres and gravity wells; Cal cultivates void-qi from the infinite sea of deep space, requiring standard Foundation steps of opening meridians and learning circulation techniques (Book 1 focuses on 'how to open meridians 101' and combat instruction). (2) Sect / academy ranks — sect entry via soulship sponsorship, disciple tiers, elder evaluations, resource allocation and duel days gate advancement; elders threaten expulsion if progress stalls, and social currency/trading of sect resources determines standing. (3) Material-gated realm advancement — to advance to Bronze and higher tiers, disciples must gather specific materials from dangerous zones (Book 2: Ilirian jungles and ruins of a dead civilization) — progression is resource + trial locked. (4) Power scaling teased to galactic sovereign tier — reviews note near-godlike top cultivators control interstellar society in a cyberpunk dystopia, with long-term war (Stargazer's War) as endgame. Reviews explicitly call it 'cultivation story (with qi and opening meridians)' and 'progression fantasy' with 'meridian breakthroughs' as core loop.
